About Off Grid Collective

A planning resource for people building self-sufficient lives.

What we do

Off Grid Collective is a planning resource for people building self-sufficient lives. We publish three things: calculators that size systems for your real usage, guides written for your region’s climate, prices, and regulations, and a product catalogue with independent scores.

Everything here is built for one reader: someone who is serious about off-grid living and wants numbers they can act on, not inspiration content.

Why we built this

Three years ago we sat at a kitchen table adding up a $400 monthly utility bill, in a house we could barely afford, in a city that exhausted us. A $14,000 quote just to connect a piece of rural land to the grid settled it. We weren’t escaping society — we were escaping dependency.

Today we run on 90% solar power, rainwater collection, and a garden that supplies about 30% of our vegetables in season. Our combined utility bills dropped from $400–$600 a month to about $40. The first year was harder than we expected and better than we hoped.

We built this site because the information we needed didn’t exist in one place. Solar sizing was buried in forums. Product reviews were written by people who had never lived with the products. Regional rules — permits, subsidies, voltage standards, monsoon timing — were scattered across dozens of government sites. We wanted the resource we wished we’d had.

How we score and review products

Product scores on this site are editorial. Here’s what that means:

  • We select products independently. No brand pays for placement in our catalogue, and affiliate relationships do not influence scores or rankings.
  • Scores reflect off-grid use, not spec sheets. We evaluate products against real off-grid conditions in your region: climate durability, repairability, warranty terms, and total cost of ownership — not just headline specs.
  • Affiliate links fund the site. When you buy through some links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Prices you pay are identical to buying direct.

The full disclosure sits directly above the first affiliate link on every page that has one. You can also read the full affiliate disclosure.

What we don’t do
  • We don’t accept free products in exchange for coverage.
  • We don’t publish content we can’t stand behind with a number, a source, or direct experience.
  • We don’t gate guides behind an email signup.
