Calculation Assumptions
- Calorie densities are averages across common staples in each category (air-dried, uncooked where applicable): grains ~3,550 cal/kg, protein ~3,100 cal/kg, oils ~7,800 cal/kg, fruits & veg ~820 cal/kg.
- Cost estimates use bulk/wholesale prices for dried staples and are converted to United Kingdom currency. Freeze-dried or ready-to-eat products cost 3–5× more.
- Weight is dry/packaged weight. Canned goods add water weight (a 400 g can may be only 250 g of actual food). Budget additional storage space for canned items.
- Dietary profile shapes calorie ratios across categories, not specific food items. Adjust quantities based on your actual diet and any food allergies.
- Rotate your food stock — most dried staples have 1–5 year shelf lives. Freeze-dried products can last 20–30 years sealed.
